In a recent statement, at the 228th regular meeting of senate, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, expressed his commitment to rebuilding Nnamdi Azikiwe University and restoring its former glory.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University had indeed weathered a tumultuous year, marked by both academic excellence and internal strife. The institution, once known as a beacon of hope, found itself navigating through a period of uncertainty and controversy.
Prof. Ikechebelu reiterated His profound gratitude to the Visitor to the University, His Excellency and the President of the Federation Ahmed Tinubu on his swift and decisive intervention on the Leadership crisis that recently engulfed the University.
Interestingly, the crisis had threatened to derail the university’s progress. A dispute over the appointment of key university positions such as the substantive vice chancellor and registrar sparked protests and accusations, casting a shadow over the institution’s reputation. The controversy highlighted the importance of transparent and democratic processes in the university community.
Despite the challenges, Nnamdi Azikiwe University remained committed to its core mission of providing quality education. A series of high-profile events, the ZIKS Lecture Series, , workshops, and insightful INAUGURAL Lectures, showcased the excellence UNIZIK is known for.
Professor Ikechebelu, also in the same vein, expressed great appreciation to the Minister of Education , NUC,ASSU national and ASSU NAU chapter, including the Alumni association of the University, the Media and the host of well meaning Nigerians who contributed in one way or the other in ensuring that justice reigned supreme and normalcy returned to the this great citadel of learning that bears the name of the Legendary Zik of Africa.
He enjoined all the UNIZIK Senators to show their appreciation to the Federal government of Nigeria and others who ensured that this crisis ended justly.
The Senate members in one Voice gave a standing ovation First to President Tinubu for His exemplary role in this saga and all the other contributors.
It was really an outstanding Senate meeting today .
Senators were happy and collectively used the opportunity to plead with the Federal government and all concerned that this hard won victory is not truncated in any way.
Prof. Ikechebelu reinforced his short-term vision aimed at “beautification, illumination, excellence, safety, security, and digitization.”
This vision, encapsulated in the acronym “BLESSED UNIZIK,” seeks to create a conducive learning environment for both staff and students as can be seen with the “face-lift” being done on campus as well as the ongoing NUC accreditation exercise.
The year 2024 will be remembered as a year of trials and triumphs for the university. As NAU moves forward, it must learn from this challenging period. By prioritizing good governance, transparency, and the well-being of its academic community, the university can emerge stronger, more resilient and blessed.
