*NHRC Sounds Alarm on Digital Violence Against Women, Calls for Sensitization*
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern over the rising cases of digital violence against women in Nigeria, describing it as a “reoccurring decimal” in the country. The commission made this known during a roundtable discussion in Anambra State, which brought together stakeholders to discuss ways to curb the menace.
Assistant State Coordinator of NHRC, Anambra State, Uzor Agatha Chibuogwu, identified cyber bullying, emotional blackmail, and blackmail as some of the forms of digital violence against women. She emphasized that the commission has been receiving reports of various forms of violence against women and has been taking action to bring perpetrators to book and secure justice for victims.
Mr. Ishaya Joel Bamaiyi, a senior investigation officer with NHRC, Anambra State, highlighted the dangers of disclosing private videos of minors and individuals who are going through violence on social media without their consent, stating that it is against the law and can lead to physical violence.
The participants at the roundtable discussion called on parents, especially mothers and caregivers, to take responsibility for ensuring the safety of their children, particularly minors, online. They emphasized the need for more sensitization and education on the dangers of digital violence against women and the importance of respecting individuals’ privacy online.
The event was part of the commission’s 16-day activism against violence against women, aimed at raising awareness and promoting action to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.
