The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume has emphasized the importance of national integration for sustainable development and progress of the nation.
Senator Akume made the remarks on Wednesday, 26th March, 2025 while delivering the convocation lecture held at the University Auditorium on the occasion of the 19th Convocation Ceremony titled: ‘National Integration for Unity and Progress’.
The Convocation Lecturer and former Executive Governor of Benue State who was represented by the Permanent Secretary to the Office of the SGF (General Services), Dr. Nnamdi Mbieri defined national integration as a process of unifying various social, cultural and regional groups within a nation to build a strong and cohesive society. The SGF affirmed that the theme of the convocation lecture is timely and timeless as it speaks to the very core of our identity, shared values and future as a nation.
Sen. Akume averred that National Integration is essential as to maintain the peace and prosperity of the nation saying that Nigeria as a country is blessed and the essence of national integration brings all the people closer despite their different backgrounds, beliefs and ideologies. The SGF maintained that national integration will aid the strengthening of the nation, protecting constitutional values, preserving democracy and protecting the country from foreign aggression.
The former Governor of Benue State highlighted three challenges to national integration which are, Ethnic and religious divisions, corruption and inequality, and political instability.
The SGF concluded by reaffirming that the nation’s path to greatness lies in its unity by overcoming her challenges, harnessing it’s diversity and achieving the progress the citizens so desperately desires.
The convocation lecture also featured remarks and addresses from the Chairman of the Convocation Lecturer, High Chief Senator Ben Ndi Obi; the Chancellor of UNIZIK, His Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba; The Pro-Chancellor, Barr. Olugbenga Kukoyi and the Ag. Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu.
