Stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), security agencies, and the media, have been advised to promote voter participation and professionalism in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.

This was the focus of a 2-day forum on Enhanced Reportage, Inclusivity, and Accountability for the Forthcoming Election, organized by the International Press Center and the Center for Media and Society in Awka.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Akin Akinbulu, Executive Director of CEMESO, called on journalists to embrace fundamental truth, fact-checking, and strategic inclusion in their reportage. He emphasized that the media is the compass that points integrity to the people and should tell stories that heal, not harm.

Mr. Lanre Arogundade of the IPC noted that elections are the foundation of democracy and highlighted the need for improved documentation of campaign promises and strict adherence to media ethics during coverage. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening professional journalism to increase transparency and accountability.

Ambassador Jake Epelle, CEO of Taf Africa, emphasized the need for adequate and complete inclusion of persons with disabilities and urged political parties and security agencies to adhere strictly to electoral laws to guarantee their full participation in the forthcoming election.

Security personnel, including the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, and the Director of the National Orientation Agency in the state, Mr. Edozie Ajaegbu, affirmed their readiness to collaborate to secure the electorate during the November 8 election. They expressed concern over misinformation from content creators.

The forum included a breakout session for print and broadcast journalists, who were charged with finding ways to attain professionalism during the election.
